HW due 9/26: The Sonnet

1. Sonnets are due Monday! This is the first of about a dozen original pieces that you will write for this class (excluding free write poetry). All formal poetry submissions must be formatted as follows:

They must be typed (times new roman or arial, font size 12) with the following heading in the upper left hand corner:

1: Sonnet

Title is optional!

The basic requirements of a traditional sonnet are the following:

  • 14 lines
  • iambic pentameter
  • rhyme scheme:
    • Petrarchan: ABBA ABBA CDECDE or ABBA ABBA CDCDCD
    • Shakespearean: ABAB CDCD EFEF GG

Stay true to your chosen subject! To receive full credit, you must meet ALL (including heading format) of the above requirements.

HW10 due 9/26: Where are You Going…

1. Research and take notes on Joyce Carol Oates (half a page).  These notes should be written in the notes section of your binder.  As you are researching Oates, consider what details would be critical to understanding/appreciating her writing.  Note those details.
2. Read and annotate Joyce Carol Oates’ Where are you Going, Where have you Been? (click the link for a copy of the short story). Review the annotating expectations in the course syllabus. Focus your annotations on thematic observations. I am very interested in what you annotate and why you annotated it!
3. Class Forum–Post two discussion questions.
