HW12 due 10/16: Experience More Clearly

1. Experience More Clearly–Read the article entitled “Are You as Distracted as I Am?” linked to the left in my Twitter feed. Then over the next two days, work on experiencing the moments of your life more clearly. Over the next two days, be present in the moments of your life without expectation, judgement, anticipation, etc. Allow the moments to be the end and not merely a means to an end (which only becomes a means to another end and so on). If this is too difficult, then at least take this approach to one experience over the next two days. Then, on Wednesday night, write about the experience in your binder. There is no grade attached to this…only a new experience potentially.  I ask that you authentically apply yourself to the experience.

2. Nausea–We begin reading Thursday night, so please try to buy a copy if you can. I have about 40 copies on hand.

HW10 due 10/14: The Bell Jar/Vocab #2

2. Class Forum–Post a vocab entry to Class Vocab #2

HW12 due 10/14: Jean Paul Sartre

1. Jean Paul Sartre–Print out and read the following sections on Sartre’s philosophy: Ontology, Psychology, and Ethics.  Among other things pay particular attention to the Being-in-itself and Being-for-itself. We begin Nausea at the end of this week.  This novel is quite challenging to wrap your head around and simply cannot be understood without understanding the concepts above.  Further, revisit Schopenhauer’s The World as Will and specifically the concepts of will and representation.

2. Nausea–If you can purchase a copy of Nausea by the end of the week, please do so.

HW12 due 10/10: The Stranger Essay/Schopenhauer

1. FINAL DRAFTS OF YOUR ESSAYS ON THE STRANGER ARE NOW DUE ON FRIDAY!

Arthur Schopenhauer

1. Print out and Read the section entitled The World as Will. This reading will be short but dense. Be sure to annotate.
2.  Schopenhauer, On the Suffering of the World–Located in the rear of the packet, Schopey Wopey’s essay brings us back to one of the more common themes of the term. Read and annotate the text. This is a short text so hop to it!
3. Schopenhauer–read and annotate On the Vanity of Existence. So you should be ready to discuss BOTH of his essays on Friday.
