1. The Stranger–Complete Part I.
2. Class Forum
HW due 3/16: The Stranger and Class Forum
HW due 3/14: The Stranger and Class Forum
1. The Stranger–Read and annotate the first three chapters.
2. Class Forum–Discuss either Meursault’s characterization or the juxtaposition of these two relationships: Raymond/Mistress and Salamano/Dog. Keep the discussion pithy and focused (200 words). Quote the text.
HW due 3/1:
1. Schopenhauer, “On the Suffering of the World” and “On the Vanity of Existence.”–Located in the rear of the packet, Schopey Wopey’s essay continues to focus on one of the more common themes of the term. Read and annotate the text. This is a short text so hop to it! As I expect we will quickly grasp his argument, I am more interested in a critical discussion for tomorrow.
2. Class Forum–Tonight you will write one paragraph of ~250. Naturally, Schopenhauer should be woven into this discussion. I also want you to think of another text that would complement one of Schopenhauer’s essays. The topic sentence for your paragraph should articulate how you see the two texts working together to make a point about the human condition. Then, develop that topic quoting both texts. I expect to see thematic control of each text individually and control of how they are logically connected.
HW due 3/1: The Alchemist and More
1. The Alchemist–Read and annotate up to p. 79 (stop at “And I’d better read your books,” said the boy. As for annotations, keep in mind how Coelho adds layers of meaning to Santiago’s tale (i.e. He introduces The Englishman! How does this character and what he might represent add to the themes of the novel up to this point. While he may introduce a new layer, he definitely connects to points already developed.).
2. Final drafts are now due on Thursday, Mar. 3rd for 10C and Friday, Mar. 4th. Students of 10C, if you took your peer’s essay home, you should finish the editing tonight.
3. Class Forum–Post your essay on the class forum.
4. Class Vocab–Print out and bring to class!
HW due 2/10: Class Forum
1. Class Forum–Post forum response by midnight tonight and bring in printed copy tomorrow.
