HW due 4/5: Dickinson and More

1. 20-30 minutes of free write poetry in your journal!

2. Read and annotate the following Emily Dickinson poems:

I Felt a Funeral, in my Brain
My Life had Stood–A Loaded Gun
Success is Counted Sweetest

3. Poetry Presentations–Remember, all groups should meet with me at least once the week before they present. Next Thursday, we have a presentation on Imagism. Please print out and read the the guidelines for the oral and written (<- click the links) presentations.

4. Poet Study–Your PBA for this class will be a poet study. Here you will find a list of poets to choose from. This will be first come first serve. So, as soon as you know which poet you would like to study, let me know. Details of the PBA to come soon.

HW due 1/27: Poetry Portfolio Posting on Class Forum

1. Wednesday, Jan. 27th, you will post the following poems to the class forum. So gather them and prepare them for posting:

  • An Emotion
  • Villanelle
  • Confessional
  • Elegy
  • Activist (Harlem Ren)
  • Modernist Gratitude
  • Imagist
  • Beat
  • Spoken Word
  • Essence
  • High School

Please label each poem (i.e. #1 An Emotion, #2 Villanelle, etc.) and include a title if titled. Leave a couple of spaces between each poem as well. This MUST posted by 3 p.m. Wednesday to receive credit.

Another term has come and gone. Seven chapters of your high school experience have been written; you have one to go! Live fully in this final chapter. Don’t wish it away… In the end, leave Beacon a bit better because you were here; leave the landscapes of the lives you grace in peace and happiness; and be grateful.

Poetry Seminar

HW12G: PBA Presentation

Everything you need to know about your PBA! During the actual 20 minute presentation, each student will share High School poem. After each reading, students will be expected to briefly discuss shared poems. While I am interested in hearing your holistic thoughts on the piece, I also expect to hear nuanced observations about the poem (i.e. language, style, rhythm, figures, etc).  You must comment on at least two of the shared poems.

The following should be stapled together and in this order:

  • Villanelle
  • Confessional
  • Artifact
  • Beat
  • Dream Sonnet
  • Transcendental/Romantic
  • Mimic
  • Double Consciousness
  • Essence
  • High School

Immediately following the original ten poems above you should include the following from your contribution to your group project:

  • Poet Biography
  • Poem (This should be the poem that you explicated)
  • Explication
  • Original Poem

Formatting:

  • Put the heading ONLY on the first page (i.e. Villanelle). Remember, the heading should be your name, Poetry Seminar, date of presentation, and type of poem (i.e. Beat Poem). The heading should be single spaced.
  • Starting with the second page, place page numbers in the bottom right corner of the page.
  • Times New Roman or Arial, font size 12.
  • Double Space everything except for the heading on the first page.
