2. THE STRANGER ESSAY
First Draft due Thursday, March 23rd.
Final Draft due Monday, March 27th.
3 page literary/philosophical analysis of The Stranger. What is Camus arguing about the human condition? You are expected to use The Myth of Sisyphus as a complement to your discussion. How does Sisyphus help us to understand Camus’ philosophy as communicated through Meursault? IMPORTANT: While Sisyphus is used to give some form to the discussion (i.e. helping to shape the thesis), the discussion is focused on exploring Camus’ message and how he develops that message. While not necessary, I would encourage you to research Camus further to give you further context. Folks, I expect this essay to demonstrate great thematic/philosophical control of both texts. Waiting till the night before is probably not a good idea. Your reading responses and annotations should prove to be quite beneficial here. This should be typed in font size 12 (times new roman or arial). You should have a title!!! The title should reflect your thesis. If you have any questions, please email me.
1. The Stranger–read and annotate chapters 1-3! Keep in mind, this novel is a philosophical vehicle for Camus’ philosophy of the absurd. And don’t forget about Sisyphus.
Reminder, the class readings are meant to (among other things) help inform our interpretation/understanding of all subsequent readings.
1. Read and annotate The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus in the Pack.
2. Over the weekend, print out, read and annotate the following sections on Albert Camus:
3. (Due 3/7) Precis–The Meaning of Suffering
4. The Stranger–If you would like to buy your own copy, buy this one.
IMPORTANT: We are reading Jean Paul Sartre’s Nausea next. I will need a few folks (10) to buy their own copy, so please do so if you are able. We will begin reading over next weekend. Click the link for Nausea!
Also, thank you for a meaningful discussion today!

Keys to Good Writing:
There will be little rubs and disappointments everywhere, and we are all apt to expect too much; but then, if one scheme of happiness fails, human nature turns to another; if the first calculation is wrong, we make a second better: we find comfort somewhere.
